About Community Engagement

Community engagement for the Kicking Horse Canyon Project began many years ago, gaining momentum in 1997 with the development of the Corridor Management Plan for the Trans-Canada Highway between Kamloops and the Alberta Border. Further studies took place as part of the Cache Creek to the Rockies Program the next year. Input obtained during these studies was applied in moving forward the with 26-kilometre portion between Golden and the Yoho Park boundary which became known as the Kicking Horse Canyon Project.

With the launch of the project in 2003, engagement included broad public sessions (open houses), and regular meetings with a Community Liaison Committee with representation from a broad cross-section of community stakeholders and interests. In the early days of the project, engagement focused on the first phases. Engagement on Phase 4 began in 2008.

Following the announcement in 2017 that Phase 4 would be proceeding, a new Community Liaison Committee was established. The new committee has an expanded range of representation, with many new members, as well as some who had participated before.
